11am. Sacramento. Sub Depot. Down the street from Adventures in Comics and Games.
"So you wiped a guy in a Mercedes because he drove through a stop sign." Jeff knew me, but yeah, this morning I might have taken things too far. "Josh, you know cleaning up messes is not free. Cleaners gotta be paid. Suppliers gotta be paid. I know you don't want to move again."
"No, I do not want to move again, bitch." I gave him a little shit, but part of what he said was right. Moving always did suck, and dusting a jerk because of bad road rage was not the smoothest thing to do. "So where am I going?"
"Just into the city. You'll be back later today." Jeff slid some papers to me.
"Normal thing or something fun?" I looked over the papers and spotted something that jumped at me. A certain face caught my eye. No way! This was ridiculous. It could not be him!
"Something different I guess." Jeff looked past me.
"Uh, Jeff. This is beyond different!" I realized how loud my voice was, but quickly lowered it. I started looking through the papers some more.
"So what's really different. A guy went too far, some people want him killed. No sweat." Jeff always talks with his hands, and it never failed to bother me. He was from NYC, but no one knew why he had moved to Sacramento. I guess the price was right.
"Well, the fee must be high." I slid the papers into my case.
"No. Normal fee." Jeff cracks his knuckles.
"Oh really?"
"Yes really, dipshit. You make plenty. The boss says it's a one day job, so you get a one day fee." Jeff slid his chair back, scratching the hell out of the floor and creating a terrible squeal at the same time.
"So where is the backup?" Yeah I was good, but not this good. This assignment was stretching it as far as I could tell. Sure, I could just take a position and line up a rifle, but the target was too high profile. If something went wrong I was screwed.
"No backup. You can handle it big guy. Enjoy the rest of your day. Don't fuck up."
"Well Jeff, if something happens, I guess you'll be the first to know won't you."
"You better believe it sweetie." And with that he strolls out the door.
